Soup Restaurant had humble beginnings since 1991 and they opened their first outlet at Smith Street.

The founders, Mok Yip Peng, Wong Wei Teck, Wong Chi Keong and Ho Hong Chin, decided to open the restaurant as they realised herbal soups were getting more popular in Hong Kong - so much so that restaurants specialising in soup were opening left right centre - and they wanted to jump on that trend.

They had foresight that herbal soups would be popular, especially amongst young office workers with limited time and resources to enjoy home-cooked food.

In 1994, Mok Yip Peng - who has a Cantonese background and grew up in Chinatown - upbringing in Chinatown, introduced several Cantonese-style home-cooked dishes which were termed "Chinatown Heritage Cuisine". These were nutritious and popular with the crowd, especially their signature samsui ginger chicken.

Soup is an integral part of Cantonese cuisine and as my partner and his family are from Hong Kong, I've spent many years enjoying homecooked Cantonese food.

So, my expectations for Soup Restaurant were quite high and I am pleased to say that they passed the test.

My partner and I ordered the Double-Boiled Whole Coconut with Black Chicken Soup, Lotus Pork Rib Soup, Tofu Prawn and of course, the signature samsui chicken.

The samsui chicken is definitely an experience. Tender, moist slices of chicken and cucumber slices are arranged around a centre dish of ginger sauce and served with a head of lettuce. Diners are supposed to wrap some chicken, cucumber and ginger sauce in the lettuce and enjoy it in one bite, or mix and match the different components however you like it.

We also really enjoyed the Double-Boiled Whole Coconut with Black Chicken Soup. This was extremely interesting because the soup actually came served in the coconut itself. The coconut added a nice sweet, alkaline taste to the soup. My only gripe was that the black chicken was rather boney.

The Lotus Pork Rib Soup was the soup of the day (they switch it up all the time!) and was just a classic soup that warmed my belly.

I also highly recommend the Tofu Prawn. It has a deceptively simple name but the dish is more complex than that. What really carries it is the gravy, which is similar to what you would get with chilli crab. I recommend you order some mantou to mop up all that saucy goodness.
