Opened by Hui Wei, the handmade noodle stall is loved by locals around the area and those who travel far and wide for a bowl of comfort food. Their shopfront is plastered with photos of the owners with celebrities as well as politicians.

The food centre was recently renovated in 2018, thus a pleasant area to dine in with a plethora of food stalls to choose from. Hui Wei Chilli Ban Mean stands out with its red signboard of a while variety of choices, and the long queue of customers. The stall owner will probably ask you how spicy you want your chilli ban mian to be, because its chilli is really potent and spicy - so tread carefully. The noodles are handmade, so do the sauce that goes with the dry selections. Options for small or large bowls, as well as added ingredients such as clams, fish slices, etc.

I ordered the Signature Chilli Ban Mian (dry) and asked for a less spicy after learning my lesson the previous time. Each bowl comes with minced pork, meatballs, fried ikan bilis, cabbage and an egg with a separate bowl of soup. While the bowl may look ordinary, this homely dish is packed with lots of flavours and spice.

The flat noodles is chewy and light, absorbing the sauce and chilli when mixed together. Add in a scoop of soup to allow for a wetter texture and for the chilli to coat the noodles better. The chilli has an aromatic kick that doesn’t overpower the taste, but complements the noodles and ingredients well.
