From its yellowing signboard and old-school kitchen set-up, it's evident that Kim Hai Hokkien Mee has been at Circuit Road for quite a few decades — and it has.

The owner has left the stall to his employees to handle and the current one has been here for around seven years. He was out for work for two years when the owner approached him and suggested he help with the stall.

They specialise in only one dish — local Singapore-style Hokkien mee — and this comes in four sizes according to price — $4/$5/$6/$8.

I am an avid Hokkien mee fan and I can proudly say that I've tasted most of the more popular Hokkien mee stalls in Singapore. So, I wanted to see how this underrated one would measure up to the famous brands out there.

And boy, was I impressed. I ordered a $6 plate as I was quite hungry, but the portion size was much bigger than I expected and was good for two people.

Cooked in a rich seafood stock, the Hokkien mee here had an intense umami flavour that coated every strand of noodles. It also came laden with ingredients like pork belly, egg and prawns. There is also lime on the side so you can add a little zest to your food as well as sambal chili to add some heat. All-in-all, one of the better Hokkien mees I've tried and I definitely wouldn't mind coming back here again to eat it.
