Ma Bo Lor Mee specialises in, as its name says, lor mee. It was established in 2013 and is run by a woman called Li Xia and her business partner.

The pair were inspired to set up the business when the business partner whipped up some lor mee for a gathering. This was well received by their loved ones, so they decided to take a leap of faith and open a hawker stall. This proved to be a good idea because now, they have multiple outlets islandwide and are one of the more famous lor mee stalls in Singapore.
Fun fact — the lor mee recipe, which was passed down from Li Xia’s partner’s grandmother, has a gravy that is made from seven herbs and is prepared the night before so that the flavours are given ample time to reach its peak.

I really love coming to Ma Bo Lor Mee for its lor mee — it’s extremely wallet-friendly (prices here start from just $2.50!) and the food is consistently good no matter what outlet you go to.

I usually get a classic bowl of their lor mee which comes with silky yellow noodles and ingredients like fish cake, half an egg and braised meat. There is also an option that comes with their popular fried fish. All this is doused is a viscous sweet and savoury gravy that is made from a blend of herbs. The dish was also surprisingly filling, which makes it even more value-for-money.
