Opened on 2 June 2004, Jin Jin Dessert is run by two young hawkers who had very different and interesting work histories before deciding to venture into the F&B scene. Calvin had been doing insurance and Ewan had been a DJ. They had actually initially wanted to come together to set up a beer garden in a hawker setting but this unfortunately didn’t work out. Therefore, they decided to start Jin Jin Dessert despite not having any background in making traditional desserts. They had a rough start and their desserts initially tasted horrible and they almost gave up on the business. In between, they took a break to upgrade themselves and Ewan travelled to try desserts from all around the world and they both also sampled desserts from different parts of Singapore. They used this experience to brush up on their desserts and that was the turning point for the store. Now, they are one of the most popular stalls in ABC Brickworks and you can easily spot their queues from afar.
While the stall serves a pretty impressive array of local desserts, the two that come highly recommended is their Gangster Ice ($3) and Chendol ($2). Prices here are kept extremely affordable despite the quality of desserts, making this an excellent place in Singapore for people to have a taste of classic local desserts. The Gangster Ice, their speciality, is essentially a dessert that consists of shaved ice, mango cubes and a generous scoop of fresh durian puree that is doused in sweet condensed milk. I initially felt like the combination of durian and mango would be odd but it surprisingly went very well together. The chendol is also a popular menu item and the traditional dessert uses gula melaka that comes from Indonesia and is painstakingly prepared by them daily. You can really taste the difference with every bite!
