Koung’s Wan Tan Mee has been around since 1964, serving traditional wanton noodles with charcoal-roasted char siew, handmade dumplings and chilli sauce. There are not many places in Singapore where char siew is roasted over charcoal as it takes a lot of time and effort to bring out the taste and flavour. And for this reason, Koung’s Wan Tan Mee is definitely worth the trip and price.

This hawker place located in a corner along Geylang road predominately only has Uncle Koung’s stall and majority of the people are there for their wanton goodness. People wait for 45 minutes for a bowl, so don’t be too surprised if you don’t spot a queue but have to wait for a while to get your food. Even the egg noodles are skilfully cooked to perfection, mixed with its homemade sauce.

I honestly didn’t expect to wait that long for a bowl of wanton noodles, but I was eagerly wanting to try the so-called ‘best wanton noodles in Singapore’. Despite the long wait, I’d say that Koung’s Wan Tan Mee does live up to its name. The char siew is -hands down- one of the best char siew I’ve eaten - tender, juicy and packs so much flavour in it. It can be a little sweet to some, but the caramelisation of it is what makes it so enjoyable.

Get the spicy noodles if you can take a little spice because their special chilli sauce gives just the right amount of kick without it being too overpowering. Don’t underestimate the soup because it has such a robust flavour, served with chewy, smooth and aromatic steamed wantons. I love this dish.
