Ya Kun was founded by Loi Ah Koon, an immigrant who came from China to Singapore to start a new life.

This was done in partnership with two other Chinese immigrants and they set up shop at Tekok Ayer Basin. However, these partners eventually left and Ah Koon was left to manage the business by himself. But he succeeded and eventually, his wife helped him run Ya Kun Toast.

After over 15 years at Telok Ayer Basin, he relocated the store across the street to Lau Pat Sat. In 1984, it moved back to Telok Ayer Transit Food Market while Lau Pa Sat was being revamped. The original stall finally settled at Far East Square. As the business expanded and Ah Koon and his wife grew old, their children have taken over the reins.

Now, Ya Kun Toast can be found almost everywhere on our sunny little island!

I visited the Junction 8 outlet on a weekday evening and despite it being so late, the stall was packed with people.

Thankfully, I managed to get a seat and I ordered myself a classic kaya toast and a smoked cheese toast.

The kaya toast, as usual, tasted phenomenal and nostalgic, and I savoured every bite. But one underrated dish is the smoked cheese sandwich. This is served with a dish full of kaya and patrons can dip the sandwich in for a sweeter taste. However, on its own, it is salty and I much prefer it that way!

I also enjoyed their drinks. While their tea and coffee is excellent, their milo is really good too and was super frothy!

Looking forward to trying the other offerings on Ya Kun's menu.
