Founded in 2010, Old Street Bak Kut Teh is one of the more well-known bak kut teh spots in Singapore. Not only that — their 23 outlets include places outside of Singapore like Indonesia, Shanghai and Bangkok. They also have won accolades like the Singapore Prestige Brand Award 16.
Here, they sell Teochew-style bak kut teh, which is the more peppery rendition of the dish. Apart from that, they also sell an array of other classic Chinese dishes like braised pigs trotter, seafood bak kut teh and pig's kidney soup.
I've been to quite a number of bak kut teh restaurants in Singapore and I can safely say that this one is one of my favourites. Apart from regular bak kut teh — which was absolutely delicious, mind you — they also sold something called seafood bak kut teh, which certainly intrigued me.
I soon found out that this seafood bak kut teh was just like your regular rendition, but jazzed up with a generous amount of seafood like fish, prawns and clams. It also included your regular pork ribs too.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that the fish here was extremely tender and plump as I expected the pork ribs to be the star of the show. The ribs itself were also fall-off-the-bone and very fleshy. The soup was also to my liking and had a good amount of pepper without being overwhelming. I also like how you can get refills!
If seafood isn't your thing, the regular bak kut teh is fine too and you can also get one of the sets. I got Set A which comes with bak kut teh soup, you tiao, beancurd and rice.
