Yuen Sin Kitchen just moved into its current location at the office canteen of Apex@Henderson and has been operating for about a month after moving from its previous locations at Clementi and Kelantan Lane. The stall is owned by a man called David and a woman called Tina.
The stall specialises in simple yet wholesome local fare such as minced pork & century egg porridge, chee cheong fun and yam cake, with everything here costing below $6. Previously, they used to sell nasi lemak, economic noodles and fried chicken wings, but their new location does not allow them to sell those.
Currently, they mainly cater to the office workers in the area as well as folk who live in the HDB flats nearby.
Signature
Yuen Sin Kitchen was a little hard to find as there is no MRT station nearby, but it is easily accessible by bus. The stall was tucked away in the corner of the office building’s canteen and the set-up was extremely humble and simple.
I ordered myself a bowl of fish porridge with egg ($4 + 50 cents) and chee cheong fun ($2.50). These were cooked freshly on the spot and I watched the cook prepare my porridge over a hot induction cooker in a metal pot. The porridge was exactly what I needed during my lunch break — soothing, comforting and nourishing. I especially liked its texture, which was thick and creamy. For the cheap price point, the fish was also of surprisingly good quality and it had a firm texture and was very sweet.
I also really enjoyed the chee cheong fun. Strangely enough, the ones served here do not come doused in sauce like how other places serve it. Instead, the sauce was presented at the side of the plate so you control how much of it you want on top of the rice cakes. The texture of the chee cheong fun here was also excellent — silky, smooth and with a good bite.
