Thanks or no thanks to the crazy boom of ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, Newton Circus is now one of the hippy places to go for late-night food, or just getting your hawker craving settled. Of course, Newton Circus is known for its local food fare, and Heng is one that is filled with customers.
Not forgetting that Heng has been around since 1971, was awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand for its quality. Over the years, this stall has been a fan-favourite and you would have to wait for a while - at least 15-20 minutes to get your food, especially if it’s during the peak hours. One thing’s great is that the owners still steam their own carrot cake - more homemade style compared to other stalls where they get their supplies from a factory.
The stall owners aren’t exactly friendly - seems like a culture there at Newton Circus. Do note that Newton Circus was known for touting customers and have since dialled down their pushy antics.
I ordered a plate of oyster omelette and it took at least 20minutes of waiting time. I was a little annoyed because there wasn’t a queue at the stall, and so I assumed there weren’t that many people, and perhaps it was also because I was hungry for food.
Firstly, I loved the colours of the oyster omelette, that the egg had a nice yellowish-orange touch, as well as the crispy charred ends. While I don’t expect to have a lot of oysters on my plate -considering it was the cheapest option, I thought the portion was a too little. Maybe with Covid, hawker stalls are trying to cover their costs, and so the portion gets smaller. In any case, I thought to give this plate a chance.
And luckily I did. I enjoyed the soft and crispy egg - something that takes years to achieve. It wasn’t as starchy like other places I’ve tried, but I thought the oysters were okay though a little smaller than I expected. However, the chilli that comes with it is great - spicer than normal but gives a nice punch to the overall taste.
