Tanuki Raw first opened in Singapore in 2012 and soon became popular for its innovative modern Japanese fare that takes inspiration from American dishes.

They became even more popular in 2015 after they introduced their iconic Truffle Yakiniku Donburi (beef rice bowl), which is touted as the best beef bowl in Singapore!

The brand has been expanding steadily over the past few years and currently, they have four outlets in accessible locations — Orchard Central, Funan, Jewel Changi Airport and Cross Street Exchange.

I dined at Tanuki Raw on a Sunday evening and while it was rather late, there was still a steady stream of customers.

As the restaurant depends mostly on natural light, the place was a little dark when I was there but overall it was still all right.

The extensive menu left me spoilt for choice but eventually, I settled on the Charcoal-Grilled Char Siew Unagi and Jewel Chirashi — yes, the Jewel Chirashi is exclusive to the Changi Jewel outlet!

The portion size seems a little small for the price but don't be fooled, there is actually a very substantial amount of food!

The seafood on the Jewel Chirashi bowl was very fresh and the sashimi was thick cut. I also found the char siew unagi very interesting — it really tasted like char siew, with unagi texture! The foie gras was also very creamy.
