The humble business was started by Mr Hui Chik Yan, 49, a hotel-trained chef from Hong Kong.
His shop wasn't always located at 209 Kovan Market & Food Centre. Previously, it was at New Upper Changi Food Centre.
What makes his soup standout is how there is no use of MSG or too much salt -- the flavours here are kept as natural as possible, which is great for health-conscious folk who want a cleaner meal option in the hawker centre.
And it's clear the soup here is a winner because over the years, they've been featured in the press — such as Lianhe Wanbao and The Straits Times — numerous times.
I'm a sucker for a good bowl of soup but I'm exceptionally fussy about how it's done. Many places make up for the flavour in soup by adding a ton of MSG and salt, which can leave one feeling sluggish and even dehydrated.
So I was pleasantly surprised by what Yan Kee Kitchen had to offer.
I ordered the Imperial Chicken and added 50 cents for a bowl of rice. I've eaten herbal chicken all my life and I absolutely love it. Right off the bat, what surprised me about this rendition is how viscous the soup (or in this case, it could be gravy) was. It was so thick and luxurious that I almost thought that cornstarch was added! But no, Yan Kee Kitchen promises that no MSG or other additives are added so this was au naturale! Very impressive.
The chicken was also fall-off-the-bone tender and I managed to enjoy the flesh with ease. For $9, the portion size was also comfortably good for one person. Truly a wholesome meal and one that I enjoyed very much.
