With a history of over 30 years, Jin Ji Teochew Braised Duck & Kway Chap has been in the business since 1983. Run by Mr Melvin Chew, a second-generation owner, and his sister and mother, the stall is popular for its braised Teochew-style braised dishes. Initially, Melvin’s parents were very against the idea of him taking over the store. But eventually, he convinced them to do so and he brainstormed ideas to help the business reach out to more potential customers, especially the younger generation. That was where the inspiration for his most popular dish, the Bento Combo Jumbo Set, came from.

Bento Combo Jumbo Set
This is definitely one of the more interesting dishes I’ve eaten at a hawker centre. I would like to think of the Bento Combo Jumbo Set as a deconstructed Teochew braised dish platter, with all the various components neatly displayed on a Japanese-style plate. You get different ingredients such as yam rice balls, daikon slices, braised duck, offals, pickled vegetables, pork belly, tau kwa and an oozy soft-boiled egg. As the braised components are prepared hours ahead, they all are packed with an aromatic herbaceous flavour. I am not usually a fan of yam rice but I really enjoyed the ones here, which were not too starchy and quite fragrant. I try not to eat pigs intestines when I am out as I have a fear of coming across dirty ones but I was glad to find that the offals were thoroughly cleaned.
