You know you can’t really go wrong when you have a stall that takes up at least 3-stall lease to dish out your favourite bowls of curry noodles. There are a few good stalls to get your lunch and dinner fix at the ever-crowded Hong Lim Market and Food Centre, and Ah Heng is one of them.
After all, the bright neon green sign stall is a recommended stall by the Michelin Guide, so that’s a great guide if you are unsure what to get.
Like most bowls of noodles, you can choose what type of noodles you are looking for - Bee Hoon, Yellow noodles, mee pok or thin noodles. There are also different sizes for the hungry souls (small -$5) and the famished ones ($7 - large).
The ‘original’ Ah Heng has retired, but the family-run stall uses the same recipe to serve its customers. The son of Ah Heng is said to be the one who runs both outlets together.
The food centre may not be a crowded place for dinner, as some of the stalls have closed for the day. However, you still can find a line of customers queuing at Ah Heng stall, waiting for their bowls of chicken curry noodles. There were about 2 to 3 people in front of me, but it took me less than 15 minutes to get my order. You won’t miss the stall as it is plastered with magazine clippings, as well as sticker signs of recognition.
What I really enjoyed about this bowl of curry noodles is their rich and ‘lemak-ness’ of their noodles. They are also rather generous on portions - with slices of tau pok, fishcake and shredded chicken. The curry isn’t too spicy for my palate, but has a tinge of kick that you are looking for in a bowl of curry noodles. I’d say for those who want something spicer, definitely get their chilli. The thing of curry is that you tend to feel a bit ‘jelak’ (sick of eating) after a while due to the coconut and rich flavours, so go slow and prep a drink by your side when eating it too.
