Specializing in a variety of fried local dishes such as Hokkien mee, char kway teow and fried oyster omelette, Hai Nan Zi recently became famous for being one of the nine hawkers that were awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand title in 2021. The stall is situated at the bustling Chong Pang Market and Food Centre in Yishun and was actually pretty unheard of — that was until, they were awarded the Bib Gourmand. All dishes are fried on the spot once your order is placed and you can watch the chef in the kitchen whip up your dishes in front of your very eyes. According to the Michelin inspector: “Not to be missed is their popular fried kway teow, which is cooked-to-order with cockles and Chinese sausage.”

Signature

Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee, Fried Kway Teow

Based off what the Michelin inspector recommended, I decided to try the fried kway teow. I also added on a plate of prawn omelette just to get a rough gauge of how good the food here is and to see if it lived up to its award. Both were served to me piping hot and the stall owner kindly dished out some chilli for me to pair with my dish.

The fried kway teow had a decent amount of wok hei and char without being too cloying and the noodles had a firm bite to it. I also enjoyed the bits of cockles and Chinese sausage that were speckled around the dish.

While the fried kway teow was decent, I much preferred the fried prawn omelette that was crisp yet juicy with chunks of prawns. My only gripe with this dish was the fact that the prawn tails were left intact so you had to peel them off before eating it. But, small issue.
