Simpang Bedok is truly the destination for food lovers. Even with Mee Pok, there are several stalls within walking distance and sporting similar names, it’s easy to mistake one for another. However, you may spot Jalan Tua Kong Lau Lim Mee Pok by the workers' bright orange uniforms and well, the long queues around the area. It’s hard to miss them.
Despite the large area filled with seatings, the place is always packed with customers - either waiting for a table, or waiting to order their food. The stall sells a variety of food and drinks apart from their well-known dry mee pok, and we’ll recommend you to get yourself an appetiser, side dish or a drink because people had ever waited for at 45 minutes for their bowl of noodles. Their homemade chilli sauce is one that people go back for, but it can be really spicy for some, so proceed with caution.
I had the dry mee pok with chilli and the dumpling soup on a weekday afternoon. Perhaps it's because I arrived just a little before the lunch hour, I didn’t have to wait long for my order, A little over 5 minutes and I was served with both my noodles and soup.
The noodles was cooked al dente - firm to the bite, something I think it's hard for some stalls to even achieve this. I particularly enjoyed the fishballs which were bouncy and springy, as well as the homemade sauce cooked with the noodles.
It was a good meal as a whole, but the noodles was too oily for my liking. The dumpling soup however had just the right lightness to the tastebud, while the dumplings had generous fillings without being too overpowering - a perfect dish to complement your bowl of noodles.
