75 Ah Balling is a family-run business which is currently run by third-generation owners.
It has been around since 1947 and specialises in traditional Chinese desserts called tang yuan. For the unitiated, tang yuan is a glutinous rice ball that is filled with fillings like peanut and sesame.
The humble stall was started by Aw Kim Chee who started out from a pushcart along Jalan Sultan. Eventually, he moved to Golden Mile Food Centre in 1975, which explains the name of the stall.
They have since expanded and now have stalls in Punggol, Chinatown and Bedok.
Tang yuan is one of my favourite traditional Chinese desserts and 75 Ah Balling just so happens to be one of my favourite places to get them!
I was curious to see if the quality of food here remained consistent with their other branches and I am pleased to share that it was.
I ordered 6 tang yuans in ginger soup and chose matcha, peanut and sesame fillings. You can also DIY your own dessert and choose what fillings you want your tang yuan to have, as well as the type of soup (they have longan, ginger and almond soup too).
The dough to filling ratio in tang yuan is very important and 75 Ah Balling really nails that. While remaining chewy, the tang yuans all burst open revealing a generous amount of filling held inside.
