Founded by Mr Ng Ba Eng, who started selling the famed noodles from a pushcart more than 50 years ago, Eng's Wanton Mee has become a household name that every Singaporean knows of.
After selling noodles in a pushcart for awhile, Mr Ng Ba Eng moved the business to Dunman Food Centre in Joo Chiat and over the years, he won multiple awards for his unique noodles.
His Son, Mr Desmond Ng, helped his father with the business since 2009. Other family members also lent their help.
In 2012, they were approached by a man called Mr Jason Sim for a business proposal to expand the business. Eng's Noodle House was then incorporated in February 2012 and moved to 287 Tanjong Katong Road.
Mr Ng Ba Eng passed away from a heart attack in 2013 and there has been a lawsuit between his children and the brand's business partner, which has caused some complications.
My partner and I are huge fans of Eng's Wanton Mee. The noodles here have a different taste and texture compared to other wanton mee variations in Singapore, which make it unique.
The wanton noodles are tossed in a secret sauce that gives the dish a savoury taste. Love chilli? Be sure to add their famed chili sauce, but be warned — it is VERY spicy, so don't add too much at one go or risk having to gulp down plenty of water!
Each bowl of springy noodles comes laden with ingredients like char siew, boiled greens and their iconic wonton dumplings. If you love their dumplings and can't get enough, you can always opt to get extra on the side. You can also try their fried wantons which are equally delicious and paired with mayonnaise. Other dishes you can try include Handmade Ngoh Hiang, Tau Kwa and Prawn Fritter.
