The famous Song Kee Fishball noodle has an outlet at Serangoon, a few bus stops away from the MRT station. The ‘Song Kee’ is not a stranger to many locals here as they have been know for their handmade fishballs and herh keow (fish paste meat wrapped in chewy dough-like skin). This outlet at Serangoon has links to the family-run name, but does steer away a little from it. According to sites, it is with Chua Chin Heng, cousin of the previous owner who has over 20 years of trade experience.

In any case, it is always nice to have a standalone eatery where people go in for delicious bowls of noodles. Newspaper clippings and photographs with celebrities are plastered around the red interior, but gives off a cozy vibe despite it not being an air-conditioned area. Generally, it is a nice and clean place to dine in, but sadly drinks are all canned or bottled drinks.

Signature

Minced Meat Fishball Noodles

I’ve tried fishball noodles from Song Kee (other branches), so I did come in with expectations. First impression of the place is that the area is clean and welcoming, with walk-in crowds flowing in every now and then. The guy who took my order wasn’t as friendly as I hoped, and I was a little disappointed the drinks options had only bottled or canned drinks. However, getting to eat a chilli mee pok dry fishball noodles was my agenda and I didn’t mind the lack of coffee options.

I’d say it was a rather generous serving with the handmade fishball and her keow, alongside fishcake and lards. What I enjoyed about this bowl is that the noodles was cooked very well, coated nicely with vinegary sauce and chilli. It was quite spicy for me, but nothing can’t help with a sip of a cold drink. Of course, the fishball was so chewy and juicy, I see why people come to this happy place for a bowl of satisfying and affordable meal.

While it isn’t really a place to ‘chill’ and catch up with friends, it definitely is an eatery where it bowls of noodles just make one smile from ear to ear.
