It's always exciting to see ex-restaurant and hotel chefs open their own hawker stalls because most of the time, it means that you can get quality food at a fraction of the price.

That's the case with Shang Hai Fried Xiao Long Bao, which opened in 2022 at Chinatown Complex Food Centre.

The stall was founded by Chef Jiang, who used to work at Crystal Jade and Paradise Group as a dim sum chef. Apart from that, he has over 25 years of experience crafting delectable dim sum.

He also specialises in a dim sum called sheng jian bao, which essentially are fried xiao long baos (yes, there are soup in them!).

Apart from that, his stall has tbhe usual array of xiao long baos and dumplings, as well as Chinese noodles.

This queue has a neverending line of customers till they sell out. I've always wanted to try their food but never wanted to queue but I finally bit the bullet and decided to do so!

I waited around 20 minutes in line and another 15 minutes for my food. Thankfully, they passed me a buzzer so I didn't have to loiter around outside the stall.

I got the xiao long, truffle xiao long bao, dumpling noodles and of course, the original pork sheng jian bao.

The sheng jian bao was impressive. It has a thicker exterior compared to a xiao long bao so I was worried that it may be too doughy, but it was just nice. When I bit into it, the porky soup burst into my mouth! Truly a theatric yet enjoyable experience.

I also really liked the xiao long bao and it really tasted restaurant-quality. The truffle ones were especially interesting and had a strong truffle oil aroma and taste. I also found them extremely pretty because of the black skin!

Noodles were good but I'd give it a skip to enjoy all the dumplings instead!
