Heng Ji Chicken Rice is one of the oldest chicken rice establishments in Singapore has been around for over 60 years.

It used to be located at a food alley in Chinatown called Smith Street food alley back in the 1970s and eventually was relocated to Chinatown Complex Food Centre.

The business was started by Kai Cheok Heng before being taken over by his son Chan Yeow Seng and daughter-in-law Lim En Ai. En Ai passed away at the age of 80 in August 2024.

The couple had trouble finding a successor as their children did not want to take over the business. Two cousins eventually helped to do so in 2022.

The shop has been featured on many food blogs such as ieatishootipost, Sethlui and Eatbook.

Heng Ji Chicken Rice is a stall I always walk past whenever I am in Chinatown Complex Food Centre and I finally decided to give their food a try.

When I visited on a weekend, there was only one other person besides myself in the queue. The chicken rice was prepared on the spot and I got my food in minutes.

The chicken here was silky and plump. Rice in a chicken rice dish is crucial and the one here is fragrant and not too greasy. To enhance your experience, dip the chicken in the provided sweet soya sauce and chilli sauce. Or, you can even pour these sauces all over your dish!

All in all a simple but decent plate of chicken rice.
