Maruhachi Donburi & Curry was founded by chef-owner August Wijaya along with his Japanese wife, Yoko.

August used to be the ex-head chef of a famous tonkatsu restaurant at Ion Orchard for 9 years.

The business was opened in November 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The first stall started out in Punggol and they have since expanded to have stalls in Jurong West, Havelock Road, Sembawang Crescent, Bukit Batok, Choa Chu Kang and Jalan Mas Puteh.

The menu has 3 main sections — Teishoku sets served with Japanese rice and miso soup, curry rice and donburi.

Diners can expect dishes like the Blackpig Katsu Set, Chicken Katsu Set and Ebi Prawn Fry Set.

Japanese stalls in coffeeshop settings aren't that uncommon but rarely are these opened by ex-restaurant chefs.

I was intrigued by the food here because it looked very expensive despite its affordable price point.

I ordered the Blackpig Katsu Set and a bowl of the Una Tama Don.

The katsu really was of restaurant quality and was extremely tender and juicy with a good amount of crisp from the breading. The rice on the side is Japanese and this was fluffy.

The Una Tama Don was also really good and there was a generous amount of eel. Eel was cooked well and was soft.
