Tiong Bahru Food Centre is filled with many food stalls, so to find a fish soup stall in this vast food centre is hard to stand out. Not unless you are an ex-head restaurant chefs, then that may pull customers over.

For Qing Yuan Fish Soup, this is exactly that – with their popular New Zealand Blue Cod Soup for only $12, an upgrade from their batang fish. The chefs were from the Naked Finn, so that says a lot here.

There are different options – from Batang Fish Head Soup or the normal Batang Fish Soup, or even seafood soup if you fancy. Their homemade Ngoh Hiang are also selling well. You can also do add-ons for prawns, bitter gourd, vegetables and the various fishes as well. For the carbohydrates, there’s rice, porridge, or even bee hoon.

If you are feeling fancy, then go for the blue cod fish, which is their unique dish, but that do sets you back about $12, something more than you would usually spend in an hawker center, but definitely only a fraction of what you could get at a restaurant.

Blue cod fish is definitely not your usual hawker fare, and I actually took the batang fish soup as I would rather go with something I am familiar with.

The batang fish slices are really chewy and fresh and quite a generous portion as well. I enjoyed each bite, especially when paired with the chilli, which adds a layer of taste to it. The soup also is very rich in taste, and doesn’t have that fishy smell. Its clear and transparent soup also tells how much work it went into boiling this bowl, with its added ingredients like tomato, tofu and vegetables. It’s sweet, just a tad salty and packs a whole lot of flavour, which goes really well with my bowl of rice.

If you’re round the corner or don’t know what to get on a rainy day, this is the one to go for.
