Opened in early 2021, Reimondo Seafood Congee is located at the quirky Pasir Ris Centra; Hawker Centre and is helmed by ex-convict and millionaire Raymond Tan. Apart from running his humble hawker stall, he also repairs cars during the day. While he is a successful business owner, some may be surprised to know that he spent 5 years in and out of prison between 2000 and 2009. For awhile, he was also a millionaire thanks to how well his previous car business was doing but he eventually lost that all to gambling. Eventually, he decided to get himself together and started a hawker stall in MacPherson in 2017, which unfortunately failed. When Covid-19 struck this year, he walked past a vacant hawker stall in Pasir Ris and decided to try again by starting Reimondo Seafood Congee, which became a huge hit. And the rest is history. He also took plenty of cooking tips from Singaporean food blogger Leslie Tay (ieatishootipost) to perfect his recipes. As he was an ex-convict, he hopes to be able to hire convicts like himself so that he can give them a new lease of life.
Signature
When here, it is a must, of course, to get his legendary Seafood Congee which only costs $6.90 for a small bowl. A larger bowl will set you back by around $12.90. The dish is cooked Cantonese-style and features thick, silky congee that is loaded with ingredients like Hokkaido scallops, prawns and clams. Packed full of umami, the seafood flavours blended well together and enhanced the flavour of the congee. It was one of the richest and most flavourful congees I’ve ever had and I can’t believe that it is so cheap! When here, you also must get the tea-smoked salmon ($9.90). This salmon looks simple but it is complicated to make as it takes 24 hours to brine the fillets to retain all their moisture. The smoky flavours are intense and it is one of the better smoked salmons I’ve had to date — I can’t believe I found it in a hawker centre! If you’re hankering for something crispy, get the prawn UFO ($4.90) which features fried wanton stuffed with chopped prawns. Delectable!
