Madam Leong Ban Mian is one of those household names that all locals know of. And while she serves delicious bowls of Hakka-style ban mian, do you know that she has a sad backstory behind it?
Madam Leong moved to Singapore from Kuala Lumpur and her ban mian restaurant was passed down to her from her mother. She picked up this skill for her husband and daughter but back this, it didn't cross her mind to set up a ban mian stall.
Everything went downhill when her husband called her from Shanghai and asked for a divorce, making her a single mother. This left her jobless and feeling very lost. In fact, she even almost took her life in front of her daughter as she was in such a dark place.
Thankfully, her daughter's screams were enough to bring her back to her senses and the pair eventually decided to open a ban mian stall together to tide them through this hard period.
And that definitely paid off because they are one of the more popular ban mian spots in Singapore.
Ban mian is a comfort food that I grew up with — there is something oh-so-addictive about those chewy handmade noodles that make me feel so happy!
When I visited Madam Leong Ban Mian during the weekday, there was a steady queue. But this was cleard quickly and before I knew it, I had my piping hot bowl of ban mian.
And just like I had hoped, this ban mian was excellent. The noodles had a fantastic al dente, chewy texture. This paired well with the rich, umami-packed broth that was laced with anchovies, spinach and meatballs.
Apart from soup ban mian, they also have dry ban mian and even tom yum ban mian, which I am looking forward to trying next time!
