“Wedang”, when used in the local context, it means to go on ‘tea or coffee breaks’. The shop, opened by Mr Kamis since 2004, is now managed by him and his wife. Sometimes, you will be able to spot their son cooking in the shop, where the couple hopes their son will eventually take over the reins.

When you are there, try the Tahu Goreng which is after all, their signature item that won them the Michelin Bib Gourmand award. In addition, other popular dishes are the Soto Ayam, as well as their Gado Gado.

Each plate of Tahu Goreng is made to order - including frying it fresh - and if it doesn’t pass the standard, they will rather request the customer to wait for a little longer than to serve a subpar dish.

Mee Soto Ayam

I tried the Soto Ayam with noodles and enjoyed this spicy chicken soup on a cool afternoon. Like most of the Javanese-influenced dish, there are options of ordering bee hoon or yellow noodles instead. Each bowl comes with begedil (potato patty) and chilli on the side.

Be warned. If your spice tolerance is not that high, don’t mix all the chilli in the soup because it is really spicy. However, I do feel that Soto Ayam needs a little bit of that spice that balances the chicken soup, which tends to be a little salty. This rich and satisfying bowl is one that your tummy will be thankful for during a chilly and windy evening.
