It’s quite a rare find to have a Peranakan stall in a hawker center – catering to a crowd that usually dishes out an average of $4-$6 for a full meal. At Charlie’s Peranakan, you’ll be shelling out more than $6, an average of $10 is something you’ll be looking at.

Peranakan generally refers to the mixed Chinese-Malay/Indonesian heritage where it traces back to the origins in the 15th-century Malacca where dishes crosses both the roots of the ethnicity groups. Food like Ayam Bbuah keluak (chicken stewed with black nuts), Hee pio soup (fish maw soup), Chap chye (mixed vegetable stew) are quintessential Peranakan dishes, which all can be found at this stall.

There are many newspaper clippings plastered all over the stall, which usually indicates some kind of recognition to its taste and quality of food. The stallowners look a bit fierce – like most nyonya (peranakan ladies) but once they warm up to you, they’ll go the extra mile to make sure you are fed well and enjoying their food.

The only downside to it is that it isn’t the best for serving of one. The dishes come in medium to large portions that are better for sharing, so go in pairs of groups or more to savour the dishes.

And warning, the belacan (chilli) is SPICY. Like really spicy, so go slow on it. It’s worth the tears but let’s not torture ourselves in the name of food.

It’s safe to say that I grow up with Peranakan food choices being shared and cooked for me as my grandmother is peranakan and a little bit of the blood lineage is within me. I brought my mother along to have this lunch meal with me as she enjoys her Peranakan food a lot. And glad to say.. ‘mom approves’.

We had the Babi Ponteh (Nonya-Style Braised Pork in Fermented Soy Bean Sauce) and the Chap Chye (vegetables) and both were really great dishes paired with rice. The Babi Ponteh has a rich dark savoury taste that is a little sweet and very tasty. Braised for hours, the meat is so chewy and deep in flavour. Goes really well with the rice as well.

For Chap Chye, there's more gravy than what you'll expect from other stalls, but it's so fitting as a complementary dish. Vegetables are fresh and a little crisp as well. Go with the spicy chilli and it's quite the perfect Peranakan meal one can ask for at the affordable price point.
