Adam Road Food Centre may not be a huge hawker centre, but there is a good range of variety of food options, and is said to be one of the better food centres for the quality of food. It is also the one better known to tourists, as well as a good location near to a MRT station.

Cheng Ji is helmed by a lady who took over the stall from her mother-in-law in 2003, and has since been churning out plates of savory fried dishes in her solo journey. She mentioned that her son does come by the stall to help sometimes too. She is very friendly as well, chatting up with her customers and even was happy to help with recommendations.

Because of the range of food dishes it serves, expect quite a queue at this stall, for locals and tourists alike go for the familiar dishes like Hokkien Mee, Char Kway Teow and carrot cake.

You probably can’t go wrong with the main dishes. It’s no-frills but it does have a familiar taste that everyone loves.

There are different options to choose from, but I chose Char Kway Teow for a lunch meal as I was looking for something familiar and spicy. I also went for this dish as I was looking for that charred, smoky aroma that Char Kway Teow gives. It wasn’t anything more fancy that what you’d expect, but it’s a decent plate that packs a punch.

I didn’t have to wait too long for it, and each plate is made to order. I took about 15 minutes from my order to eating it.

The flat rice noodles, or the kway, was soft, chewy and rightly fried with the dark sauce coated evenly. The sweetness from the dark soy sauce gives a nice light taste to each bite, and if you opt for chilli – which I would highly recommend, it is fried together with it, giving it a wholesome touch to the overall palate. The smoky aroma of it all was very inviting and it extends to each bite – a combination of savoury, sweet, spicy and chewy altogether.
