There aren’t many food stalls at Adam Road Food Centre, compared to the bigger hawker areas that you’ll find around Singapore. However, it is said that some of the best stalls are housed there. A good enough variety of stalls enough to be spoilt for choice.
For this Fishball Noodle stall, it has been around since 1988 and Aunty Leng, who is the founder of the stall was said to work as a helper at a stall in Whitley Food Centre before she opened her own fishball noodle stall to call her own.
Handmade fishball aren’t a common aspect you’d find these days for its hard labour of making these rounded gems. It’s easy to spot handmade fishballs – simply by the uneven roundness of the chewy meat.
The stallowner was very friendly and kind, not only chatting up with me for recommendations, but trying to make the best of my meal experience as well. After all, Adam Road Food Centre is known for quite a tourist destination for local food fare.
You wouldn’t expect food selections at Adam Road Food Centre to be cheap, but the fishball noodle doesn’t break the bank and it doesn’t veer off too far from other food centres that you may have frequent.
Moreover, knowing that the fishballs were handmade, I was willing to part a little more for the effort and taste. Needless to say, the fishball was chewy and bouncy, a strong taste and slightly salted. Along with the fish cakes, vegetables and shallots, it paired really nice with the noodles that was al dente, nicely coated with the chili. I also ordered the special variety of the fishball, the truffle fishball. While it does have a hint of truffle – just enough to make you feel like you are eating something rich and special, yet not overpowering the overall taste of it.
It was a pleasant experience, from ordering my food to the taste of the noodles. Definitely one to recommend and will be back for more.
