Min Jiang Kueh, or these thick chewy pancakes are quite the savoury snack many Singaporeans (myself included) adore. Whether you opt for the crunchy peanut, coconut or modern variations, it is the combination of chewy and crunch.
There are many stalls all over Singapore, selling these little gems of goodness, but it is hard to find the right one that just makes people going back for more. If you are looking for traditional ones, that definitely the peanut option is the way to go. Don’t be fooled by the size of it because it can really fill you up quickly.
The stall at Ang Mo Kio serves up a decent piece, with an option for peanut butter (peanut butter with crushed peanuts. Of course, other flavours like bean paste and coconut are alliable too. Sold in either slices or a whole pan, which consists about 12 slices.
I love some min jiang kueh and I love peanuts. There will be random days where I crave for some. While there are factory-made ones found in malls, it is the stalls at hawker centres that more often serves up one of the best kinds there is out there.
For this stall, while it looks rather unassuming, you can spot a good flow of customers ordering their bite-size kuehs at random timings. With a slice going at about a dollar, it is no wonder why people are flocking to get some of it before it sells out.
I enjoyed the chewiness and thickness of the flour, as well as the texture that the peanuts had. With the peanut butter spread, it just made it sweeter and gives an extra punch of that peanut flavour. However, I wouldn’t say it is the best as it lacks a bit of that fragrance from the flour. The peanuts could be roasted a while longer (I don’t think it was self-roasted) for that extra hint of taste, but overall, I thought it was an okay piece for an after-lunch snack.
