Let's share! |
Singapore has its fair share of lor mee stalls but this is one of the more popular ones.
They've been around since 1959 - that's a whopping six decades! - and previously had a signboard that said 'best liu mian in town' but this was eventually switched to 'Amoy Street Lor Mee serving you since 1959'.
The stall was previously located at Amoy Street Food Centre - explains the name - in the 1990s and actually sold fish soup.
So where did the lor mee recipe come from? It originated from the hawker's father who used to sell it behind Jit Poh Building in the 1960s.
The stall only sells one dish - lor mee - in two different size, with the option to add ectra fish. Talk about specialisation!
When I visited the stall on a weekday afternoon, I got sucked into the peak lunch crowd and found myself waiting around 10 minutes before I managed to order and get my food. Not bad considering how crowded the hawker centre was!
I ordered the more expensive one as it came with extra fish and no regrets. The fish was fried a beautiful golden brown and had a satisfying crunch.
The dish also came with other ingredients that are a must-have when it comes to the dish — pork belly and prawn rolls.
All these ingredients were coated in a sweet, starchy viscous sauce that made the dish more filling.
