Hair and food aren't exactly two things that go hand in hand but for Kelvin Wong, those two were important milestones in his life.

The man, who is in his 60s, worked 35 years as a hairdresser and stayed as one so he could earn money to put his kids through school. However, all along, his first love was cooking and he wanted nothing more than to start his own F&B business.

He did have a stint where he sold chicken rice but that business only lasted 6 months. So, he didn't give up and decided to pivot and sell Japanese food as it is popular amongst Singaporeans.

In November 2020, he finally came up with Amoy Don at Amoy Street Hawker Centre. He prepares all the food himself and only has a kitchen assistant who helps him with food preparations and to clean up the kitchen in the evening.

Some menu items to look forward to include Gyu Don, Truffle Tori Don and Cheesy Katsudon.

With its vibrant storefront, Amoy Don isn't hard to miss and the stall has always piqued my interest. So, I finally decided to try their food!

I went down around lunchtime on a weekday afternoon and while there was a short queue, this moved along very fast. I was spoilt for choice by the numerous number of options but eventually settled on the Cheesy Katsu Don, which seemed like one of the more popular options.

This featured crisp breaded pieces of chicken fillet that were stuffed with sticky mozzarella cheese. When you break apart the pieces of chicken, the cheese simply oozes out!

Apart from that smashing good chicken, I also love how the donburi was garnished with colourful components like purple cabbage and corn. There is also a jiggly onsen egg!
