Victor, the man behind the shop has been in the hawker business for over 40 years, making and selling vegetarian satay, otah and other dishes. He started cooking his own dishes because there weren’t many vegetarian options then apart from the few pioneer vegetarian shops around Singapore. (Some of those can be found at the food centre as well). Victor constantly tries to improve his recipe throughout the years, hoping to make it more appealing to the public, as well as opening up more vegetarian options for others.
Made primary with soybeans, his satays are grilled to order and are often the most hot-selling item at the shop. The minimum order for satay is 10 sticks, so preferably a dish best shared with family and friends.
Having heard and read about Victor Veggie before heading down, I was excited to try their vegetation satay that people have been raving about. The wait wasn’t too long as I was the first few customers of the day.
The satay is chewy, tender, and definitely has the burnt edges that we look for in this dish. The smokiness and hints of charred taste is a delightful treat, especially when dipped in the thick and wholesome peanut sauce. The sauce is slightly sweeter, but retains the Asian piquancy to it.
