Once located at Choa Chu Kang – which explains the CCK in their shop name, is now located at Macpherson food centre. The hawker center itself isn’t that huge and it mainly only opens in the morning and some shops in the evening.
Owners who are affectionately called “Aunty Yvonne” apparently learnt how to make the handmade char siew )the process of roasting it) from her uncle about 20 years ago and took the business thereafter. It is evident from the various newspaper cuttings, photos and magazine-blog reviews plastered around the stall.
This hawker center has a lot of stalls to choose from, and most of them aren’t open in the afternoon. So if you are looking for some late lunch, this may not be the place to go. However, CCK 190 Wanton Mee stall opens a little longer than the other stalls, so that’s always a blessing. Also, there really is a lot of birds and pigeons flying around the area, so choose your tables wisely.
When I went for this, it was a little after the prime hour of lunch, and so many stalls weren’t opened by then. There wasn’t a queue for this and so I didn’t have to wait long for it. It took me about 5 minutes to get my lunch.
I ordered the dry wanton noodles and it came with a side bowl of soup. The noodles was springy and chewy, and the sauce was enough to coat the bowl of noodles adequately. I really enjoyed the char siew, which was sweet and had a glistening coat of chewy sides to add to its flavour and texture. Wanton was one of the better ones that I’ve eaten, chewy minced meat with a soft dumpling skin. It held the meat properly even when chewed, which doesn’t disintegrate like some other dumpling we’ve eaten.
It spiciness was great and I really enjoyed this bowl of noodles. If only the hot weather wasn’t that scorching, I would enjoyed this meal even more. Would go back for more.
