Macpherson Market and Food Centre, by itself is a rather older area, usually filled with older folks. I’d even say the area closes quite early, usually around 2pm. So go there for breakfast or early brunch timings to not only secure a seat, but to get food from your favourite stalls. This is also perhaps one of the reasons why the food options there are rather cheaper compared to other food centres.

This Hainanese Chicken Rice stall, hidden at the back row of the food centre, is one of the few stalls that doesn’t close that early. Perhaps because of this reason, the string of customers that flock to the stall does get more frequent as time passes.

The stall owners are a friendly bunch, and do take time to strike a conversation with their customers as they wait for their food to be served. The uncle manning the store asked me what I was doing in the vicinity and said I should come earlier for my meals the next time around.

Like most chicken rice stalls, there are steamed and roasted choices to choose from, alongside add-ons like braised egg, taupok and vegetables, as well as soup options.

I ordered my go-to plate of steamed chicken rice. At such an affordable price, I thought the portion given to me was rather generous for I’ve had experiences of getting really measly portions at various hawker centres.

While it wasn’t anything too fancy or delicious, I thought my plate of chicken rice was a decent and overall a yummy meal. It came with a bowl of soup, which was a tad salty, but I enjoyed the fragrance of the rice. The rice wasn’t too oily, and was grainy enough for my liking. For the chicken, it chewy and tender, and paired really well with the rice. Of course, garlic chilli makes everything just much better.

After my meal, I am again remembered why Chicken Rice is one of Singapore’s famous dish. A hearty meal at an affordable price that fills the tummy with happiness.
