Soon Lee has been based in Clementi since 1980, and the stall is famous for its bowls of Hainanese porridge. They only have 3 types of porridge on the menu, which namely are pork, chicken and fish porridge. The stall is a family business which has been passed down across 3 generations. The current owner of the stall is a young man who took over his father when he was in his 20s. He started learning how to make these wholesome bowls of porridge when he was just 9 years old. All the porridge here is made to order, which is why the waiting time for your food is a tad bit longer than most other porridge spots. However, it’s well worth it.

Signature

Chicken Porridge

The porridge sold here is done up Hainanese-style, making it thicker and grainier than other types of porridge such as Teochew and Cantonese porridge. Soon Lee’s porridge is also made with a secret stock which gives it its unique flavour. The chicken porridge here uses sliced chicken instead of chicken shreds, which I feel makes quite a huge difference as it gives the dish more bite and body. The chicken was also tender, succulent and juicy, something that you rarely find in chicken porridge these days. Adding an egg to your porridge is an optional choice, but I highly recommend that you pay that extra 30 cents to do so; it truly makes a difference! The bowl looks deceivingly small, but trust me when I say that the dish is more filling than it actually looks
