The humble stall started out in the 1990s by a family that used to sell nasi padang a few shops away from Changi Village Hawker Centre. Ms. Nooraini is one of the store owners and she takes turns with mainly her brother to man the stall, with her usually taking the morning slots. They start a normal working day brutally early in the morning, with Ms Nooraini waking up at 1.30am almost every day just to prepare the ikan bilis and make her signature nasi lemak chilli sauce; Talk about dedication! One of their main competitors is Mizzy Corner, a row of stalls behind them, and both stalls never fail to have endless snaking queues. International Muslim Food Stall Nasi Lemak sells out very fast in the day, so do come down earlier to avoid disappointment!
This isn’t the first time I’ve been to this nasi lemak stall and I can attest to the fact that the food here has remained consistently good throughout the years. They have a variety of nasi lemak options to choose from, but the crowd favourite (as well as mine) is the Chicken Set. For just $3.50, you get a plate piled high with fragrant coconut rice, a sizeable piece of fried chicken, ikan bilis, cucumber slices, a fried egg and a generous dollop of sambal chilli. The rice here is what really keeps me coming back: aromatic, well separated and very fluffy, it ticks off all the right boxes of what an excellent nasi lemak rice should have. The fried chicken is also one of the better nasi lemak chickens I’ve tried to date and it’s very crispy while maintaining a tender and juicy inside. The sambal, on the other hand, is the perfect blend of spicy, sweet and pungent; Ms. Nooraini’s efforts definitely do not go to waste every morning! My only gripe with this place is that it’s too far away. I wish they would open an outlet somewhere more central!
