Sliced fish soup may sound like an easy dish – soup and sliced fish, but it is definitely easier said than done. This stall, Jin Ji Fish Soup at Ghim Moh Food Centre is always packed with a long queue waiting for their bowl of soup. By the looks of the stall owners, it seem like there are a lot of regular customers there, chatting up while waiting for their food.
Sliced fish soup usually comes with 2 options – the steamed sliced fishes or the fried fish slices. Most people say to go for the steam one because it’s ‘fresher’, but honestly the fried option gives that added texture and taste when done right. Also do opt for the milk version where usually carnation milk is added to the soup for that richness and full-body taste of the soup. It is also cooked with bitter gourd, tomato and tofu slices as well.
Sliced fish soup has always been something that I enjoy eating, whether is it a hot or cold day in Singapore. My go-to carbohydrates would be a bowl of rice to accompany my soup. I love dipping a spoonful of white steamed rice to a bowl of piping hot soup and gulping it down. Try it.
The sliced fishes was fresh and also chewy with every bite, without it disintegrating when picked up by my chopsticks. The soup may look plain but it was tasty. I wouldn’t go as far to say it was full-bodied and rich, but definitely had a good sweetness to it. Of course, the cut chilli on the side really does help in giving that added spice and saltiness to it. Overall, a pleasant dish that hits the right feels.
