Located at Ghim Moh Food Centre, which is strategically located with various work buildings and residences around the area, it can get really crowded during the weekday lunch periods.
It is quite evident during those times as to which stalls are the popular ones, clearly shown by the long, snaking queues. For Heong Huat, while it doesn’t have a super long queue that takes 30 minutes, I’d say it has a decent queue length of about 6 people in line.
For fishball noodles, there is an option of having dry or soup options when you buy a bowl from the stall. If you are a spicy lover, I’d always recommend the dry option because soup doesn’t do the taste justice. Also, the type of noodles is always one that makes this dish so special – whether flat noodles, thin noodles or bee hoon, it’s really up to one’s choice. The amount of ingredients as well as how much noodles you want are determined by the various price points.
All orders are made by hand, and while it states that it is handmade, perhaps the fishball is handmade, or each bowl is made by hand. There isn’t much interaction with the stall owner, as he is perpetually busy making the noodles, but at least his aura doesn’t scare the customers like some others do.
For the affordable price point and what was given, I thought Heong Huat Fishball Noodle stall served up a decent bowl of noodles for lunch. Despite having to wait for about 15 minutes for my order, I wasn’t too bothered by it. It was a little small in portion, but for a small eater like me, it was enough. If you are hungry and eats a lot, I’d say get the $5 option for more noodles.
The fishball is bouncy and chewy, has a salty aftertaste, but goes decently well with the noodles. For the noodles, I thought it was a bit bland and sometimes sticking to one another, despite the soya sauce and chilli being evenly spread on it. Would have prefer it to be slightly more al dente, but overall it was okay. The mushroom helped in terms of texture and taste, and the soup was a nice end touch to it.
