Legitimate Thai food cooked by a native Thai is hard to find in Singapore, let alone a hawker centre, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist! Tucked away in Ghim Moh Market & Food Centre is Yuan Authentic Thai Stewed Beef Noodles, an establishment that is helmed by a little Thai lady who has lived in Singapore for over 20 years. She tells me that she just set up her stall at Ghim Moh four years ago and since then, she has been dishing out homely Thai dishes like beef noodle soup and pork knuckle rice. Everything is made on the spot too and after ordering your food, you can watch her carefully put together your dish. She is also one of the rare few hawkers who doesn’t close after lunch so you can enjoy your tea time and dinner here too!
Signature
What can I say, the food here well and truly exceeded my expectations — I genuinely felt like I was at some Thai restaurant in Bangkok! I got the Thai Stewed Beef Noodle Soup, the Thai Pork Knuckle Rice and the Thai Fish Cake.
The beef noodle soup was extremely robust and had a rich beef flavour. You can pair this with your choice of noodles — I opted for bee hoon — and apart from that, it’s topped with thick slices of beef, beef balls and fresh Thai vegetables for that additional crunch. Very authentic stuff!
What I found even more well-executed was the Pork Knuckle Rice. This was a simple dish of just tender pork knuckle and fluffy white rice but boy, did it hit all the right spots. The pork knuckle was well-cooked and melt-in-your-mouth tender. It also had plenty of collagen from the skin which added a nice softness to the dish.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the Thai Fish Cakes which the owner fried on the spot for me. Very crisp, very fragrant and a nice centerpiece for the table! It cost less than $7 per person for this meal and my dining companion and I were very happy campers!
