The popular flat rice noodles, also known as hor fun, is seen as an alternative source of carbohydrates, but some say it’s less heavy than others like rice and noodles. It can usually be paired with thicky starchy gravy, or stir-fried, usually with beef, chicken or seafood.
If you do a quick research, many people online do give rave reviews to this stall, and when you are there, be prepared to queue for it as well. Long snaking queues is common for Hin Hor Fun. I’d say for peak lunch and dinner timings, at least half an hour will be a good gauge.
The stall is manned by – one may assume- a father-son duo. The older uncle is the chef behind the wok, meticulously churning out plates of hor fun throughout the day. The younger male tends to the customers, helps to add on the meat slices and sometimes even chat up with the people queuing. Because the hor fun are fried in batches and then slathered over with gravy, it does speed up the process a little.
Recommended to go with the beef as the beef slices are so tender and the best thing is that they are already marinated with a homemade sauce, which adds so much flavour to the dish! What makes a good plate for hor fun is probably the charred taste that gives the ‘wok’ element to it. It is safe to say Hin Hor Fun sort of top the list of that.
I ordered the beef hor fun, because that was one of the recommended dishes. The rice sheet itself is actually quite tasteless, so having a rich and flavourful gravy is important. Or in this case, giving that charred ‘wok’ flavour and aroma makes it a perfect dish.
There is a generous portion of beef slices (options for seafood, prawn, etc) on top of the hor fun, and because the beef itself is marinated, the salty-sweet sauce adds a layer of taste to the dish, elevating it. The beef slices, only using lean meat, was also really chewy and tender that I was tempted to just order a bowl of beef slices! (No, there wasn’t an option like that).
It can get rather rich and overwhelming, but good portion, good flavours. Just be prepared to queue for it.
