The original ‘granny’ of Zhao An Granny Grass Jelly started selling grass jelly on the streets many years ago. The current owner decided to take over the business from his grandmother after she passed on and the recipe that she used many years ago remains the same till today. The current owners of the stall also make it a point to make all the jelly by hand to retain the recipe’s authenticity. Apart from selling grass jelly desserts with a variety of ingredients like nata de coco, palm seeds, and longans, they also sell grass jelly drinks which have been proven to be very refreshing on a hot day!
I got myself a Cold Grass Jelly Drink ($1.50) to cool myself down as the weather was very hot and heaty. This was packed and sealed like bubble tea so that there would be no spillage. The serving size was very generous and the grass jelly had a very strong, refreshing taste. The drink also contained shreds of grass jelly which were very addictive to bite on — it was like having a little surprise with every slurp! I definitely can foresee myself coming back to try their grass jelly desserts in the future.
