Nasi Lemak & Chicken Rice Hipster has been at Golden Mile Food Centre for over 20 years. It was started by a Muslim couple, Mr. Mohd Jasman and Ms. Norafiah Jafridin, who actually met for the first time at this very same hawker centre. Their extensive menu has an array of Muslim food ranging from nasi lemak to ayam penyet. Aside from that, they also sell Halal versions of other popular local food such as hor fun, chicken rice and even char siew. They are most known for their nasi lemak, and they have many different variations of it that you can’t find anywhere else.
While they have many variations of nasi lemak, I decided to try the classic Nasi Lemak Flintstone (S$5.50) to see how good their original nasi lemak is. This essentially is your typical fried chicken nasi lemak assemble and the one here at Nasi Lemak & Chicken Rice Hipster comes with a generous heap of coconut-infused rice, a massive fried chicken, salad and a dollop of spicy sambal. They were very generous with the rice; one portion is enough to feed 2 people. I also really loved the fried chicken that remained succulent and tender even after the frying process. It also broke away easily when peeled with a fork so there wasn’t much hassle in eating it. The sambal was very sweet, which is how I prefer my sambal, and it had a tinge of spice to it that wasn’t too overwhelming. I also found it interesting that their side salad consisted of grapes and quail eggs. Definitely not something you see every day! If they could nail the basic nasi lemak, I can imagine how good their other nasi lemak variations would be.
