If you were to go by the number of customers or patrons queueing at a stall, then Ah Xiao Braised Duck is one that you definitely should join the queue for. Run by second-generation hawker – the son work at the stall, often to help his parents and it is said that he took over from their parents over 10 years ago as he didn’t want the stall to be gone after they retired.

There isn’t really a menu of sorts and it seems like most people actually know what to order. If you get frazzled, don’t be, because the young stall chap is really friendly and helps with your orders as well. Most of the ingredients that you’re looking for are all displayed at the storefront. Alternatively, you can listen in to what the people in front of you have ordered and learn a tip or two from them. From braised duck to eggs, offal to tofu, think of it as kway chap but an option for rice – and the famous duck slices. It’s a traditional recipe where the sauce is said to cook for hours to get that fragrant deep braised taste. Chilli, always ask for the chilli.

Standing in line for at least half and hour, I was determined that this stall will be one for the books. I was anxious as the queue got shorter because I didn’t know how to get my order in place. The people in front of me were just pointing and shouting their favourite ingredients in dialects that while I understood, wasn’t sure if I could communicate fluently like them. When it got to my turn, the young owner was really nice and all I had to do was to say it was for how many pax and what I wanted.

What makes Ah Xiao stand out is their sauce. The braised, fragrant sauce is what makes this such a great plate of food that warms the tummy and heart. The slightly salty sauce has a very rich and deep flavour that adds so much depth to the meat. Was also served a very generous portion of it. The duck meat is soft and chewy, and doesn’t have that harsh gamy taste. And chilli for anyone that loves that punch of spice – but be warned, it’s really spicy.
