With a history of more than 50 years, stall owner Mr Lim started off with a small cart helping his mother at Dawson Road. With the newspaper clippings and magazine articles, along with stickers of the history and reviews, the stall at Haig Road has been operating from the food centre for more than 6 years now.
Known for its braised duck, there are also other offerings such as porridge, noodles, kway chap and other side dishes like peanuts, salted vegetables and beancurd skin. The stall front looks a little dimmer compared to the other stalls around, with the stall owner, Mr Lim promoting his food to potential customers. While some may call him friendly, it may seem like a desperate move to draw customers to his stall.
Perhaps I was there past the lunch hour, the stall didn’t have a long queue of customers, except for a guy in front of me. I overheard the stall owner telling him that if he wasn’t satisfied with his food, he would refund him. I personally thought it was a confident gesture. I ordered the Braised Duck Noodles and his assistant got to work on cooking the noodles. He chopped the duck slices like a pro, and in less than 5 minutes, I was served with my order.
While the presentation may not be Instagram-worthy, the food was tasted good. I thought the yellow noodles was cooked really well, springy and had just the right amount of sauce and oil to coat the noodles. The braised duck slices had a light herbal flavour and was tender and soft. The gravy over the meat was slightly salty, but when eaten with the noodles, it was a perfect combination.
