Prior to moving to its current location at Haig Road Food Centre, the popular Zheng Guang Wanton Noodles was located at Hin Hollywood Canteen, which was since demolished in 2011 for redevelopment of the area.
The stall has been around for over five decades and the name is derived by the owner's desire to be honest with his customers about the type of ingredients and preperations used to make the food.
The stall's menu is simple yet substantial and has wanton noodles (of course!), shredded chicken noodles, chicken feet noodles and dumpling noodles. For those hankering for something more spicy, there is also laksa.
I reached the hawker centre on a Sataurday afternoon and it was pretty crowded.
Thankfully, the stall itself had no queue and I got my food really quickly.
It is manned by an elderly lady who slowly but skilfully whipped up my order of wanton noodles. The dish was simple — char siew and vegetables atop a bed of springy noodles, with an accompanying bowl of wontons in soup.
Don't be fooled by its simple experience — the dish is extremely dish! the noodles were al dente and soaked up a good amount of the sweet ans savoury sauce. The char siew, while lean, was pretty tender and paired well with the noodles. I also really loved sinking my teeth into the plump, meaty wontons.
