Jurong 505 Market & Food Centre is home to a number of Michelin Bib Gourmand awardees but aside those, there are gems like Da Po Bak Kut Teh. It is run by a man and an elderly lady, with the elderly lady in charge of taking orders and serving while the man runs the kitchen. Surrounding him are massive pots of boiling soups and gravies filled with bak kut teh, pork trotter and other braised ingredients. The prices here are also significantly cheaper than what you’d get in standalone bak kut teh restaurants, probably because it’s a hawker centre setting. You also get the thrill of watching the stall owner cook your dishes.
I went at around 8pm and by then, the hawker centre was empty and most of the stalls were closed, with the exception of Da Po Bak Kut Teh.
The menu left me spoilt for choice but I ended up ordering a piping hot bowl of pork ribs, braised pork trotters and beancurd. I also added on a bowl of rice to pair with my meal. All these cost $16 for 2 pax, which is quite a steal!
The bak kut teh soup was sufficiently peppery and was on the lighter side. I also found out that you can ask for refills for the soup after you’ve polished everything off. Ribs were huge and very meaty with a decent fat to meat ratio. I also enjoyed the pork trotter which was fall-off-the-bone tender and very meaty as well. Strangely enough, what surprised me the most was the braised beancurd — these were super addictive! My only gripe was the rice, which was a bit stale, but that is probably because I came very late into the night.
While Da Po Bak Kut Teh doesn’t have the most convenient location, I wouldn’t mind coming back again to eat here.
