Before moving to its current location at Maxwell Food Centre, Tong Xin Ju Special Shanghai Tim Sum was previously at the now defunct Queenstown Margaret Drive Food Centre, where it was first established in 1972. Currently, it is run by a fourth-generation hawker, Sebastian Hu.
Their speciality lies in authentic Chinese food such as steamed and fried dumplings, Beijing Shanghai rice cakes and sour & spicy soup.
They also pride themselves in making all their dumplings daily by hand and none of their dumplings is kept overnight, ensuring freshness. Therefore, they only make a limited number of dumplings a day so as to not let it go to waste.
I love dumplings, whether steamed or fried, so when I chanced upon Tong Xin Ju Special Shanghai Tim Sum, I knew I had to try their offerings.
I ordered a serving of their steamed dumplings as well as a plate of their Beijing noodles. Thankfully, there was no queue and I got my food pretty fast.
The dumplings were well-steamed and the skin had a good bite and wasn't too soggy, while the meat was juicy and moist. Also, appreciate the decent skin-to-filling ratio.
The noodles had an excellent chewy texture as well, albeit slipper thanks to the viscous gravy it was doused in. It also came with a myriad of ingredients like Chinese cabbage, shrimp, fish cake and sliced meat.
