Chicken rice stalls are a dime a dozen in Singapore but Pin Xiang Hainanese Chicken Rice is one of the more notable ones, as evident from their long queues. The stall has been around for over 30 years and even has a secret recipe which helps their chicken taste so good. They also pay particular attention to their chickens which come in fresh from the farm daily and these birds need to meet the minimum weight of 2.2kg before being brought in. Why? This is to ensure that the chicken maintains its tender and juicy consistency throughout the cooking process, and you can certainly taste this in every plate of their chicken rice.

They have roast and steamed versions of chicken rice for a very affordable price point of $3 for a small plate and $3.50 for a large plate. You can also opt to top up 50 cents for an egg. I got the roasted version and the portion size was very generous despite the food being so cheap. People usually say that roast chicken is drier than steamed chicken but I was pleased to find that this wasn’t the case here as the chicken was sufficiently moist and tender while retaining the natural flavors of the chicken. I also like the sweet soy sauce that the chicken was soaked in as it provided a nice sweet touch to the overall savory dish. The accompanying rice was also very fragrant and not too greasy — just how I like it!
