Bedok Chwee Kueh needs no introduction with its many branches islandwide to fulfil the fluffy and soft cravings of Singaporeans and tourists alike. It was listed in Michelin Bib Gourmand Singapore 2019.
Chwee Kueh is essentially steamed rice cakes topped with savoury preserved vegetables and chilli, usually taken as breakfast, lunch, snack or an addition to your meal. Of course, because of its popularity and loved by both young and old, you can’t escape the queuing process. Many people order in massive amounts to keep them for breakfast the following day.
Each Chwee Kueh is taken out from the mould one-by-one as the orders come in. Also because of the low price point, many people don’t mind just having this warm food a snack for anytime of the day.
Signature
I love my Chwee Kueh warm, salty and spicy. Bedok Chwee Kueh has been around for years and it has been a food that I’d probably never get sick of. Though the queuing can be quite a deterrent for just a $2 snack, one bite of it and I thought it was all worth it. It is not easy to find a Chwee Kueh stall which sells soft and supple steamed rice cakes with less sweet preserved vegetables (chye poh) and sambal to give that extra kick.
I ordered 4 pieces ($2) and is usually enough for me as a brunch. The great thing is that the ladies do scope a rather generous portion of chye poh, enough for all my four pieces. The steamed cakes are so soft and fragile, I could swallow it without biting much into it. It is truly a timeless dish that suits all tastebuds.
